Audi e-tron Will Be Produced And Ready To Drive By 2012

Audi e-tron

Audi of America has now officially thrown its hat into the all-electric vehicle arena by announcing its decision to produce its slick two-seater EV concept known as the e-tron. The futuristic sports car is expected to hit streets in early 2012.

The new e-tron utilizes four electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack with 313 hp and an insane 3,319 lb-ft of torque. Its 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds acceleration puts many gasoline-powered sports cars on the road today to shame. To reduce the weight of the car, Audi has incorporated a space frame for the main structural body as well as fiber-reinforced plastic added-on body parts such as doors and the roof.

With a range of 154 miles on a single charge, and the well known quality of the Audi brand, the-etron has a significant leg up over some its other EV competitors in its class *cough* Tesla, but it remains to be seen how much of a demand there will be for these ultra stylish and ultra expensive EVs of the future. For the full ridiculously long details regarding the e-tron, jump to the press release here.

The Good: An all-electric sports car that rivals many gasoline powered contemporaries.

The Bad: Limited production is expected with price points out of reach for most.

The Bottom-Line: Another slick all-electric sports car that has the look and performance one would expect from Audi.
