Volkswagen’s Polo BlueMotion has only been on the European auto scene for a couple of years now, but its amazing fuel-efficiency and low CO2 emissions has already dazzled and delighted both the most environmentally and fiscally-minded of drivers. For 2010, Volkswagen is introducing a new model of the Polo BlueMotion that builds even further on its ‘greener’ traits and fuel-efficiency.

The new 2010 ‘high-efficiency’ Polo 1.2-liter three cylinder TDI diesel will deliver the same amount of performance as its predecessor, but with less CO2 and more miles per gallon. How much more you might ask? about 15 mpg more than older model, giving it a whopping 71.3 mpg on the EU combined driving cycle. Not bad for a non-hybrid vehicle.

The 2010 Polo BlueMotion achieves such fuel-efficiency by incorporating features like auto start-stop, brake energy regeneration and better aerodynamics. And if you think it looks oddly similar to a Golf, well…that’s because it basically is; only itsĀ engine has one cylinder lopped off the end. The diesel triple is rated at 73.8 hp, which helps contribute to the 22 percent drop in fuel consumption compared to the last Polo BlueMotion. CO2 emissions are also down from the previous model’s 109 g/km to just 87 g/km.

From Volkswagen’s press release:

World’s most fuel-efficient five-seater has 3.3-litre fuel consumption
Wolfsburg, 14 December 2009 – The redesigned Polo BlueMotion that celebrated its world premiere at this year’s Geneva Motor Show can be ordered now. The world’s most fuel-efficient five-seater impresses with fuel consumption of just 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The second generation of the Polo BlueMotion can be had in Germany starting at 16,500 Euros.

Thanks to an advanced version of the three-cylinder TDI engine with 75 PS / 55 kW power and other BlueMotion-specific modifications, the new trendsetter’s fuel consumption was reduced by 22 percent (or 0.9 litre) compared to the conventional Polo with a 75 PS TDI. Accordingly, its CO2 emissions were also reduced from 109 to 87 g/km.

The Polo BlueMotion employs various detailed solutions and high-tech components to attain these top-notch low values. They include BlueMotion features such as the Stop-Start system and energy recovery by regenerative braking. In addition, the Polo BlueMotion, weighing in at just 1,150 kilograms, sports numerous modifications such as a nearly closed-off radiator grille and underbody panels designed according to aerodynamic principles and 15-inch “Greenland” type alloy wheels with low rolling resistance tyres.

Standard features were extended in the new Polo BlueMotion to include a cruise control system, leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearshift grip, tyre pressure indicator, front fog lights, sporty styling of front and rear bumpers as well as outside mirror housings and door handles painted in body colour.

Orders are already being taken in Europe for the new VW, so if you live there, you might want to look into snagging one of these bad boys.

The Good: An amazing 71 mpg! Very low CO2 emissions. Sporty, affordable and well-engineered.

The Bad: Currently the Polo Bluemotion is only available in European markets.

The Bottom-Line: An affordable clean diesel that not only has low CO2 emissions, but also gets amazing fuel efficiency that current gasoline hybrids can only dream of
