A 6,000 square foot rooftop organic farm on a warehouse in Brooklyn helps mitigate air pollution while at the same time provides locally sourced fruits, vegetables and herbs to local restaurants. Watch the video.
The Good: A good sized productive farm in one of the world’s most densely populated urban centers that provides multiple environmental benefits. Soil conditions and pests can be more easily controlled.
The Bad: More difficult to maintain seeing as everything must be lifted up onto the roof. Given NYC’s air pollution, it’s unclear whether heavy metals and other pollutants will infiltrate the soil via rain water.
The Bottom-Line: A better way of providing locally sourced food without having to take up a single square foot of land.
