iRecycle for iPhone: A Recycler’s Treasure Map

iRecycle for iPhone and iPod Touch

If you’re like me, and live in a city where finding a place to recycle anything other than the typical paper and plastic is like searching for the birthplace of your great great great grandfather, you’ve probably been frustrated by the fact that you’re trying to do the right thing, but there is nowhere (that you can find) that will take your recyclables. Hopefully, there is now a solution that problem with the new iPhone, and iPod Touch, application aptly named iRecycle (of course). While it won’t make fart noises, or generate a fake beer on the screen that you can pretend to drink, it will list and map all recycling locations in your area as well as break down the locations by what material can be recycled. Like Google maps, it will also give you directions, list the addresses, and allow you to contact the location directly. Developed on behalf of Earth911.com, the programs features are as follows:

  • Access to over 100,000 recycling and disposal locations for over 200 materials
  • Get directions to the nearest site from your current location
  • Auto-complete saves time typing so you can spend more on finding a location convenient to you
  • Check your search history to replay old search results
  • Find additional information for each location like hours of operation, other materials accepted (hey, maybe you can recycle all those plastic bags from under your kitchen sink), their Web site, etc.
  • Call locations directly from search results

iRecycle gets you from Point A to Point B. With information provided by local governments, industry insiders, organizations and everyday consumers, you can recycle hundreds of products from packing peanuts to computers. Best part about the app is the fact that it’s free. So make room for it on your iPhone and stop making that excuse you didn’t recycle something because there was no where to take it. Get it here.

The Good: Handy and useful free app that many environmentally conscious people have been needing for quite sometime.

The Bad:  It doesn’t list every single location in every single city. Currently only works for iPhone and iPod Touch.

The Bottom-line: A very needed and useful app that hopefully will encourage more recycling of materials outside of the usual scope of things viewed as ‘recyclable’.
