Not much of a story here, but I did think that these were some good examples of putting waste to work in a somewhat gimmicky fashion, but functional nonetheless.
The first example, shown above, is a clever wall built out of split wood. The wood wall is located in the office of a Portland, Oregon design firm called Parliment and acts a spatial divider to form a lounge area out of a large open space.
This next one is from Oktavilla, a magazine and web design firm in Stockholm. Again, division of a large open space was achieved by using a non-conventional building material. In this case magazines (of course), which have an added bonus of providing excellent acoustical absorption. What better use than a conference room.
Do you know of a cool example of unconventional building materials being used? There are a lot of them. Let us know in the comments.
The Good: Form, function and it’s not in a landfill.
The Bad: The structural integrity of stacked wood and magazines can;t be the greatest. Slam dancing in the conference room wouldn’t be a good idea.
The Bottom-Line: A creative use of materials that provide a needed division of space…why not.
