As you can probably tell by now, I love useful and creative iPhone apps. Especially when they help facilitate greener choices and/or a greener lifestyle. The newly updated 3rd Whale app, courtesy of 3rdwhale.com, is great example of an app that is useful and beneficial.
3rdwhale.com is a digital media company focused on providing tools, resources and innovative projects that help individuals the world over live a greener and healthier lifestyle. The iPhone app is a search and mapping engine that uses your GPS location to provide you with green business type/locations, phone numbers, ratings, info, etc. Think Google maps mixed with Yelp, the Yellow Pages, and a green business directory. It currently has a little over a dozen cities included, but is constantly adding more and updating the app as user submissions account for a majority of the listings.
The cost of the app is $1.99, but of that price, $.25 goes towards donations for 5 environmental charities 3rdwhale supports. However, you would never know this from viewing the app from iTunes as Apple, a self-proclaimed green company, will not allow any statements in the app description indicating charitable contributions. ???. Anyhow, two charities have already been selected EarthShare and Natural Capital Solutions. Three more slots are open, and you can submit your suggestions on the 3rdWhale Facebook page. Check it out!
The Good: Another useful app that helps facilitate green choices when you’re on the go. A portion of the profit from each download goes toward environmental charities.
The Bad: Currently only useful in a handful of major cities, but more are on the way.
The Bottom-Line: A fairly inexpensive app that assists in your greener lifestyle and contributes to the environment.
